3rd shift at the Waffle House

My husband and I recently came to a shocking, unexpected conclusion.
What we discovered is we’re Broke, that we need money and I needed to get a 2nd job. This of course would be difficult since my career as a stay at home mom of 3 takes up almost all of my time and energy.
The longer I thought about it the more excited I got. I might actually get the chance to converse with another adult! maybe even tell a dirty joke and drink a vodka tonic after work. Oh the possibilities.

The criteria for my 2nd job where simple.

  1. Nights and Weekends where the
    only available working times.
  2. we agreed we would do everything we could not
to burden Grandparents with baby sitting. This primarily pertained to my In-laws.
since they we’re already babysitting my sister in-laws 4 children every waking moment of the day, but that’s a whole other story.
  3. I found the perfect job! A Waffle House Sales Person!

    Yippee!, Yippee!, Yippee!

    Salesperson

Are you buying my excitement? Of course your not.

I began my official training on 8/17/05.
After a few weeks of training and apprenticeship work I finally felt as if I would be able to serve more than one customer at a time and not completely irritate the cooks with my repeating of the same mistakes over and over. I just knew I ‘d be cruising up and down the WH aisles delighting my customers and separating them from their hard earned Washington’s in no time. 1 month later and I’m still very much a N00b! being a Noob at anything always sucks.

I’ve found that I really enjoy being a waitress. I work with a great group of people and have even made a new friend

    Fluxxdog aka Mike(My Dragon*Con 2005 Buddy)

Who would of guessed this shy, bashful, weird girl was actually a people person…..DAMN I never would have figured ME a people person.
Recently I came across a blog titled ‘Scattered, Smothered and Covered‘. If you couldn’t guess it’s a blog dedicated to the Waffle House.
The author of said blog worked for three months as a cook. He described it as “The hardest work you’ll ever do for the money.” He was dead on. The work can be exhausting and the pay dismal. On 3rd shift we work from 9pm to 7am and get paid only $2.60hr plus tips. We Serve our customers, bus tables, Wash ALL the dishes and silverware and do all the cleaning in the restaurant except the windows.

There are a lot of jokes out there about 3rd shift at the Waffle House. I know because my husband has been telling them since I started (you can stop now honey, I’ve had enough). Personally I think we have some hot mommas working at my location. I should have pictures of the 3rd shift by next weekend. Hopefully this will end the stereotype held by so many that it takes 4 waitresses on the 3rd shift to make up one full set of teeth.
